How to Stay Connected 24/7 with a Free NationCHAT ZNC Bouncer

Oct 18, 2026

Have you ever closed your laptop or locked your phone screen, only to realize you dropped off IRC and missed an entire conversation? Traditional IRC connections drop as soon as your app closes or your internet flickers. That is where an IRC Bouncer, commonly known as a BNC, comes in.

What Is a BNC and Why Is It Essential?

A BNC acts as your personal proxy server sitting permanently connected to NationCHAT in the cloud. Instead of connecting your phone or desktop directly to the IRC network, you connect to your BNC. The bouncer stays online around the clock, holds your registered nickname, and collects all channel messages while you are away.

  • 24/7 Presence: Your nickname stays in your favorite channels even when your phone or laptop is completely powered off.
  • Scrollback Buffers: When you reconnect, your bouncer automatically replays the messages you missed while away.
  • Seamless Multi-Device Sync: Connect simultaneously from your phone on the move and your desktop at home without getting nick-collision disconnects.
  • Privacy Protection: Your real home or mobile IP address is shielded from other channel users, who only see the bouncer hostmask.

How to Request Your Free BNC on NationCHAT

NationCHAT provides high-performance ZNC bouncer accounts free of charge to all active community members. You can get started in two quick ways:

  1. Via Web: Head to our BNC Request Portal and submit your registered nickname, email, and preferred bouncer username.
  2. Via IRC: Join #NationBNC on any NationCHAT server and ask a BNC team member for assistance.

Configuring Your IRC Client to Connect

Once your account is created, you will receive your credentials. Enter these standard connection parameters into your favorite client:

Host: bnc.nationchat.org
Port: 6697 (SSL / TLS enabled)
Server Password: your_znc_username/nationchat:your_znc_password

Notice the server password format. Putting username/network:password tells ZNC which account and network buffer to attach to. Make sure to use your ZNC account password here, which is separate from your GNUWorld X password.

Recommended Modern Clients for Every Device

  • Windows: AdiIRC (free, modern, lightweight, with native SSL support) or mIRC.
  • Android: Revolution IRC (open source, battery-friendly, and handles ZNC playback buffers flawlessly).
  • iOS / macOS: Palaver or Mutter on iPhone/iPad; Textual on macOS.
  • Linux / Terminal: WeeChat or Irssi for terminal enthusiasts; The Lounge for self-hosted web clients.

Automating Your GNUWorld X Login

To have your bouncer automatically authenticate with X whenever it connects to the network, add an auto-perform command right from your IRC client:

/msg *perform add /msg X login your_x_username your_x_password

ZNC will execute this login line automatically every time it links to the IRC server.

Helpful ZNC Commands

You can manage your bouncer at any time right from your IRC client by sending messages to *status:

  • /msg *status listnetworks (Shows your configured IRC networks and current link state)
  • /msg *status AddBuffer #channel 50 (Configures a 50 line scrollback buffer for a specific channel)
  • /msg *status ListBuffers (Lists all currently configured channel buffers)
  • /msg *status ClearBuffer #channel (Clears stored backlog for a specific channel)
  • /msg *status help (Displays the full list of available ZNC management commands)

Quick Troubleshooting FAQ

  • Password Incorrect error: Ensure you included your bouncer username, the slash, the network name, and the colon delimiter: username/nationchat:password.
  • SSL Connection failure: Verify that SSL/TLS is checked in your client settings and you are connecting to port 6697.
  • Need a hand? Hop into #help or #NationBNC on the network, and our staff will gladly walk you through the setup.
